Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Coordinator Position

 The Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee seeks a Coordinator (10-20 hrs/week) depending on experience and abilities.

  • Applicants must have knowledge and experience in early year’s programs and services or equivalent related training.
  • Must be self-motivated, organized and be efficient working with computers and social media.
  • Effective verbal & written communication skills including public relations & public speaking skills are required.
  • Position to start March 1, 2018.

Job Summary

To coordinate and lead the Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee, and to carry out Early Childhood Development community capacity building objectives and projects to be determined by the Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee’s strategic plan, in conjunction with regional and provincial Early Childhood Development programs and coordinators.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Educational background in either education, early literacy, early childhood education, early years community development, early years social services or other related training or certification
  • Minimum two years’ experience in early years programs and services
  • Experience in community development, project management and group facilitation with effective written and verbal communications; and public speaking skills.
  • Experience in collective strategic planning is an asset
  • Experience engaging and working with Aboriginal Communities understanding cultural protocols and culture safety would be an asset
  • Knowledge and proficiency with computers and social media
  • Previous fundraising, grant proposal writing, marketing and media experience would be an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit environment preferred
  • Self starter with strong administration and organizational skills


  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

  • Ability to relate and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and community- based groups
  • Ability to facilitate meaningful discussions and manage conflict resolution during group and community meetings
  • Knowledge and experience in early child development/ early learning and local community resources for families and children an asset
  • Knowledge regarding community development and development processes
  • Working with families from diverse backgrounds an asset
  • Ability to work in a cooperative manner with families, service providers and community members
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with staff, community partners, volunteers, local employers and businesses
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including public relations and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team to promote and work collaboratively to support the goals and objectives of the Salmon Arm ECD Committee Strategic Plan
  • Experience with financial and program reporting
  • Excellent computer, clerical, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Under the direction of the Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee, the Coordinator will plan and implement activities and projects that meet the objectives of the strategic plan
  • Identify and recruit leaders from business, education, labour, government, faith and cultural groups as well health as and ECD service providers for participation in Early Years initiatives and Community ECD planning
  • Build and foster relationships with community partners, actively seek diverse valuable new core committee members and participate fully in community development
  • Support the development of the Early Years initiatives and local ECD strategic plan, including helping to determine terms of reference, working protocol, policy development, and planning. Ensure arrangements for meetings, agendas, reports, minutes and any other pertinent information are provided.
  • Develop draft recommendations for the ECD Committee as required. Implement decisions made at the table.
  • Educate self and stay informed about ECD research findings and development and circulate information and resources to community partners and the ECD committee
  • Orientate new core committee members including a review of the ECD background, and terms of reference
  • Responsible to communicate openly to the committee members regarding any concerns, issues or guidance that is required
  • Work cooperatively with regional and provincial networks of Early Childhood initiatives and comply with the Terms or Reference
  • Maintain the records of the Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee, including minutes of its meetings and the records of its activities
  • Manage the budget with the direction of the committee, including projects and activities.
  • Endeavor to understand and relate to current family needs and issues in the community (through discussions with the public at events, programs and around the community.)
  • Participate fully in community based activities and programs as prioritized by the ECD Committee. (Early Years Fair, Unplug & Play events, Canada Children’s Festival, Story time in the Park, Fall Fair parade, Fall Fair, Halloween Treat Trail etc)
  • Evaluate and report the progress and outcomes of the projects, activities and community development goals of the ECD committee strategic plan and complete all evaluations and reporting commitments of the ECD Committee
  • Professionally represent the Salmon Arm Early Childhood Development Committee at the local, regional and provincial level.
  • Ensure that the Strategic Plan of the Salmon Arm ECD committee is reviewed and updated annually
  • Seek out funding and fundraising opportunities that will contribute to community and early years planning and programming.
  • Promote public awareness of the ECD local initiatives and the importance of the early years


The Committee works with our community’s businesses, government, service providers, advocates, educators and families to ensure that our young children are born healthy, and remain healthy, nurtured and ready to flourish as lifelong learners.

They are funded by Success by Six, Children First and Building Blocks. The committee is always looking for local sponsors or for individuals and companies to make donations. A charitable tax receipt can be issued for your contribution.
